The aim of the qualification is to develop each learner’s ability to prevent, mitigate and manage the effects of infectious disease in the context of their own role and in the environment in which they operate.
The objective of the qualification is to provide a benefit to learners by enabling them to contribute
- to the effective control of infectious diseases in the context of their own roles and operating environment
- to the effective contingency planning associated with infectious disease in the context of own role and operating environment.
This qualification is a pathway qualification comprised of one mandatory core units and one mandatory unit selected from the range of optional pathways. Learners are required to have successfully achieved two units in order to be awarded the qualification certificate in their chosen pathway. The qualification certificate will reflect the qualification title identified within the pathway selected.

Learners and benefits
This qualification is for any person that fulfils a role in the workplace in any of the confirmed pathways. It will ensure safety of the learners, their associates, clients, customers, pupils or participants whilst fulfilling their role during a time of pandemic or threat of infection. It also serves to prevent the transmission of infectious disease.
Learner entry requirements
Prior to registration for the qualification learners are required to:
- be accurately identified
- be at least 16 years of age
- be able to communicate effectively in English [reading, speaking, listening and writing]
- be able to evidence a role within the workplace in the selected pathway
16 and 17-year olds are accepted into this qualification under their remit under a traineeship or apprenticeship.
Learner exit requirements
Education exit routes: This qualification will support progression on higher level health and safety qualifications.
Employment exit routes: This qualification will support a range of roles in the workplace and serve as continued professional development in this area.
Recognised centre and qualification approval status
The qualification is designed to be delivered through local, regional and national training providers, colleges, universities and industry employers. It is accessible to any organisation which meets the centre recognition and qualification approval conditions.
Qualification delivery model
The qualification is designed to be delivered through digital learning and mentoring techniques although some providers will prefer a blended model which include a face to face workshop style dependent upon the pathways, nature and risks associated with of the activities delivered in the environment. A protype delivery model is provided to recognised centres. This is fully aligned to the qualification and in consideration of the industry needs. It should be delivered flexibly to support each centre’s approach and learners needs. Due to the inclusive nature of this qualification alternative models will not be accepted.
Qualification assessment framework
The following assessment methods have been validated for this qualification dependent upon the pathway and audience:
- portfolio of evidence OR
- professional discussion
The recognised centre will be granted access to the standardised assessment materials provided by the awarding organisation at approval. The assessment tasks provide a clear indication of the knowledge, skills and understanding which will be assessed as part of the qualification. The recognised centre must ensure each learner completes the standardised tasks and tools as designed the awarding organisation. Each task contains the criteria against which learners’ levels of attainment will be measured. This serves to ensure comparable and reliable standards across recognised centres.
Qualification quality assurance
Internal and external moderation is required to be conducted in accordance with risk-based tactics. This serves to ensure that the level of monitoring is proportionate to the nature of the qualification, the workforce and the number of learners registered. This qualification has been assigned a high-risk profile due to its nature. The outcomes of external quality assurance interventions are recorded in via TAMS. Any risks are subsequently captured via the Centre Risk Profile. Centre Recognition Risk profiles provide the emphasis for additional risk controls which are proportionate to any risks presented.
