The aim of the qualification is to develop each learner’s ability to fulfil the role of a teaching assistant in primary schools. Learners will be able to assist teachers and provide specialist support in the subject-specific pathway.
The objective is to provide a benefit to learners by supporting an established role in the school environment. Whilst attending the qualification learners will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to be able to:
- demonstrate the duties of a teaching assistant in accordance with the Professional Standards for Teaching Assistants 2016
- demonstrate the ability to drive social change through contemporary learning theory, an integrated curriculum and through engagement with the EIF
- meet the expectations associated with the effective deployment of a teaching assistant in accordance with the professional standards for TAs 2016
- drive social change through quality primary education programmes (within the subject-specific context)
- design and deliver high quality primary education lessons to individuals within a whole class (within the subject-specific context)
- design and deliver high quality primary education programmes to small groups within a class (within the subject-specific context)
The qualification will lead to the safe recruitment, authentication and deployment of teaching assistants that specialise in primary physical education.
Learners and benefits
This qualification is for learners who aspire to fulfil the role of an ethical teaching assistant in primary schools. Learners will be able to assist teachers t and provide specialist support in the subject-specific pathway selected. This qualification enables learners to specialise in the design and delivery of quality physical education using the mastery approach to learning.
Learner entry requirements
Prior to registration for the qualification learners are required to:
- be accurately identified
- be at least 18 years of age
- be able to communicate effectively in English [reading, speaking, listening and writing]
- have work or a work placement in a school as a higher-level teaching assistant OR
Prior to certification learners are required to have successfully achieved a regulated qualification in safeguarding children.
Learner exit requirements
Exit routes: Education: This qualification will support progression onto the Transcend Level 4 Certificate for Higher-Level Teaching Assistants Specialising in Physical Education.
Exit routes: Employment: This qualification may lead to paid employment as a teaching assistant operating in the primary school environment.
Recognised centre and qualification approval status
The qualification is designed to be delivered through local, regional and national training providers, schools, colleges and universities. It is accessible to any organisation that meets the centre recognition and qualification approval criteria and conditions.
Qualification delivery model
The qualification is designed to be delivered through blended learning techniques, and ideally through a combination of eLearning, webinars, face to face practical sessions and work placement development. A protype delivery model is provided to recognised centres. This is fully aligned to the qualification and in consideration of the industry needs which should be delivered flexibly to support the centre’s approach and learners needs. Where an alternative model is required, recognised centres are eligible to submit this during the approval stage with a justification for the alternative which must be supported by clear mapping and full alignment to all aspects of the specification.
Qualification assessment framework
The qualification assessment strategy includes:
- Placement and portfolio of evidence
- Presentation and personal growth planning
- Programme planning, delivery and personal review [2 individuals – 6 weeks]
- Programme planning, delivery and personal review [1 X small group – Six weeks]
- Practical observations and professional discussion [1 mentor and 1 assessed]
Assessment tasks are standardised by the awarding organisation and briefs are made available to the workforce upon confirmation of the centres approval to deliver this qualification. Assessment tasks will provide a clear indication of the knowledge, skills and understanding which will be assessed as part of the qualification. Each task contains the criteria against which learners’ levels of attainment will be measured on a PASS/FAIL basis.
Qualification quality assurance
Internal and external moderation is required to be conducted in accordance with risk-based tactics. This serves to ensure that the level of monitoring is proportionate to the nature of the qualification, the workforce and the number of learners registered. This qualification has been assigned a medium-risk profile due to its nature. The outcomes of external quality assurance interventions are recorded via TAMS. Any risks are subsequently captured via the Centre Risk Profile. Centre Recognition Risk profiles provide the emphasis for additional risk controls which are proportionate to any risks presented.
This qualification is supported by Bode Education as the technical partner. It is further supported by the Premier Consortia comprised of subsidiaries of the Premier Education Group. The consortia is made up of Premier Sport, Premier Arts, Premier Wellbeing, Train with Premier and B11 Education.
This qualification is fully aligned to the established Higher-Level Teaching Assistant standards and offers authenticatable evidence of competency for HLTAs specialising in primary school physical education.
