The aim of the qualification is to develop each learner’s ability to lead safe and engaging physical activity sessions in the relevant pathway.
The objective of the qualification is to provide a benefit to learners by supporting a voluntary or paid role as an activity leader in a school, community or commercial leisure environment. Whilst attending the qualification learners will develop the knowledge and skills required to be able to:
- fulfil duties associated with leading inclusive physical activities
- drive engagement through inclusive physical activities
- meet the deployment expectations when leading inclusive physical activities in a selected sport or physical activity pathway context
Each pathway is developed in partnership with technical experts in the context of the pathway including governing bodies of sport. The partners are listed in each pathway specification, which are linked at the bottom of this webpage. Recognised centres are not able to seek approval status for this qualification. Instead they should identify the pathway qualification they wish to deliver and seek approval for that pathway via TAMS.
Learners and benefits
This qualification is for learners in high schools, colleges and universities who aspire to lead sessions to their peers under the supervision of another qualified adult. This therefore initiates an opportunity for these learners to commence a career pathway in coaching, teaching or instruction in sport and physical activity.
This qualification is also learners who are due to commence voluntary or employed roles which require them to lead inclusive physical activities in active leisure and learning environments. It serves as a safety and competency check for employers prior to deploying the learner into the role and registering them onto an industry standard coaching qualification.
Learner entry requirements
Prior to registration for the qualification learners are required to:
- be accurately identified
- be at least 14 years of age
- be able to communicate effectively in English [reading, speaking, listening and writing]
- be able to evidence an interest in physical activity
The learner will not be eligible to lead any physical activities autonomously until 18 years of age.
Learner exit requirements
Education exit routes: This qualification will support progression on to industry standard Level 2 regulated qualifications for coaches.
Employment exit routes: This qualification may lead to voluntary or paid employment in roles which require the learner to lead inclusive physical activities. This includes youth workers, activity professionals delivering extracurricular activities in schools, leisure centre activity leaders and practitioners delivering community programmes.Recognised centre and qualification approval status
The qualification is designed to be delivered through local, regional and national training providers, schools, colleges and universities. It is accessible to all organisations which meet and continue to meet the qualification delivery conditions.
Qualification delivery model
The qualification is designed to be delivered through a face-to-face model. A delivery model prototype is provided to the recognised centre. This is fully aligned to the qualification and in consideration of the industry needs which should be delivered flexibly to support the centre’s approach and learners needs. Where an alternative model is required, recognised centres are eligible to submit this during the approval stage with a justification for the alternative which must be supported by clear mapping and full alignment to all aspects of the specification.
Qualification assessment framework
The following assessment methods have been validated for this qualification and the strategy is confirmed in the Learner Assessment Brief:

- portfolio of evidence (peer-reviews)
All assessment will take part on-course.
Qualification quality assurance
Internal and external moderation is required to be conducted in accordance with risk-based tactics. This serves to ensure that the level of monitoring is proportionate to the nature of the qualification, the workforce and the number of learners registered. This qualification has been assigned a low-risk profile due to its nature. The outcomes of external quality assurance interventions are recorded in TAMS. Any risks are subsequently captured via the Centre Risk Profile. Centre Recognition Risk profiles provide the emphasis for additional risk controls which are proportionate to any risks presented.
This mandatory units of the qualification is developed in partnership with the Premier Consortia comprised of subsidiaries of the Premier Education Group as the leading provider of school activity coaches in England. The consortia is made up of Premier Sport, Premier Arts, Premier Wellbeing, Train with Premier and B11 Education.
Each optional pathway unit is developed in partnership with technical experts in the context of the pathway including governing bodies of sport. The partners are listed in each pathway specification. The pathway specifications also confirm the qualification conditions which must be complied with to ensure effective and efficient delivery of the particular pathway.

This qualification has also been approved by CIMSPA as suitable regulated CPD.
